The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, and the Honourable John Baird, Minister of the Environment, announced on Saturday that the Government has issued notices to industry and other stakeholders for information on a sixth batch of substances identified as high priorities for action under the Chemicals Management Plan. There are 18 substances in this batch.
"We are committed to improving Canadians' quality of life and taking action to protect our environment. Stakeholders may provide information that could be used to inform risk assessment and to develop and benchmark best practices for risk management and product stewardship," said Minister Clement.
Approximately 200 high-priority substances were identified under Canada's world-leading categorization of its legacy chemical substances in 2006. Health Canada and Environment Canada have met all the commitments established in the Chemicals Management Plan by announcing a new batch of chemicals for assessment every three months.
"Our Government committed to dealing with chemical substances openly and efficiently, and we are making great progress in launching scientific reviews on a number of chemicals and substances," said Minister Baird. "These scientific reviews are essential in helping to protect our environment for current and future generations.
Under the Chemicals Management Plan, when a high priority chemical is identified for assessment, the Government requests industry and other stakeholders provide information on specific substances. This is known as "the Challenge." The information is collected and assessed to determine whether these substances pose a risk to Canadians' health or the environment and if any further action may be needed to minimize possible risks.
Batch 6 substances include:
2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]
2-Naphthalenol, 1-[(2-methoxyphenyl)azo]
2,7-Naphthalenedisulfonic acid, 4-amino-3-[[4'-[(2,4-diaminophenyl)azo][1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl]azo]-5-hydroxy-6-(phenylazo)-, disodium salt
2-Naphthalenol, 1-[(2,4-dimethylphenyl)azo]
Phenol, 4-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]
Phenol, 4-[[4-(phenylazo)-1-naphthalenyl]azo]
Phenol, 2-methyl-4-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]
2,7-Naphthalenedisulfonic acid, 3-[[2,2'-dimethyl-4'-[[4-[[(4-methylphenyl)sulfonyl]oxy]phenyl]azo][1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl]azo]-4-hydroxy-, disodium salt
21-Naphthalenol, 4-[(4-ethoxyphenyl)azo]
Butanamide, 2,2'-[(3,3'-dimethoxy[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diyl)bis(azo)]bis[N-(2-methylphenyl)-3-oxo

Phenol, 4-[[2-methoxy-4-[(2-methoxyphenyl)azo]-5-methylphenyl]azo]
Methane, chloro
Propene, 3-chloro
1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, di-C7-11-branched and linear alkyl esters
1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, bis(2-methoxyethyl) ester
Benzene, (chloromethyl)
The process to address the approximately 200 high-priority substances identified under the Challenge will be completed in 2010.
